is their such a thing as a simple viewer for restoring files or browsing backups ?

for example if i take one of the drives and plug into a windows workstation the only way i can extract files from the single image backup or view them
is to install diskimage on worksation as a trial and then it allows me to mount the images for viewing

any simple tool to do this ?

unfortunately there is no special / stand alone tool for this. You have to use O&O DiskImage to mount image files.
